How Long Does SEO Take? Data and How to Measure It
Short answer
Google says SEO usually takes 4 months to a year to show results. An Ahrefs study found only 1.74% of new pages reach the top 10 within a year. Early progress shows in indexing and impressions.

SEO usually takes 4 months to a year to show results, according to Google's video guide on hiring an SEO. The time covers putting improvements in place on the site and waiting for the benefit to show.
The question of how long SEO takes usually comes up in the second or third month of a contract, when clicks have barely moved. This guide covers Google's statements, an Ahrefs study, the stages you can measure early and how to report them to clients.
How long does SEO take according to Google?
Google says that in most cases SEO needs 4 months to a year to put improvements in place and then see the benefit. The statement is in the How to hire an SEO video, which Google released in February 2017.
Google's SEO Starter Guide adds that some changes take effect within a few hours. Others take several months. Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change had an effect.
Google also says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. An SEO who promises first place is one to avoid, according to the Do you need an SEO page.
What does the data say about time to reach the top 10?
A 2025 Ahrefs study found that only 1.74% of new pages reach Google's top 10 within a year. Ahrefs used 1 million random URLs its crawler found in September 2023.

The figures cover every new page the Ahrefs crawler found, including pages not optimised for any query. The study does not separate pages worked on with SEO.
Which stages can be measured before clicks rise?
SEO progress can be measured in 5 stages: pages indexed, impressions appear, positions improve, clicks rise, then key events grow. The early stages usually show before clicks do.
Indexed · Days to weeks
Check the Page indexing report. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks.
Impressions · Weeks
Check the Performance report. Indexed pages start to appear for queries, usually at low positions.
Position · Months
Track the average position of target queries. Links at positions 20–50 are rarely clicked.
Clicks · Months
Clicks grow when queries reach the first page. Compare with last month and last year.
Key events · Months to a year
Count forms, sign-ups or purchases from Organic Search in GA4.
Time ranges follow Google's documentation, not a promise of results.
The number at each stage can serve as a KPI. How to choose them is covered in how to choose SEO KPIs for client reports.
Asking Google to recrawl the same URL many times does not speed up crawling. Make sure new pages are in the sitemap and linked from other pages.
How do you report SEO progress to a client?
Report the stage in progress with its numbers, then name the next stage and its expected timing. Clients find it easier to wait when they can see progress at the early stages.
- Month 1: pages indexed and technical issues fixed.
- Months 2–3: queries that show the site and impressions compared with last month.
- Month 4 onwards: queries in the top 10, clicks and key events from Organic Search.
Google suggests asking an SEO what results to expect and in what timeframe. Write the answer down at the start of the contract and use it as the benchmark in every report.
A report layout that covers every stage is in how to write a monthly SEO report for clients. Recalytics turns the Search Console and GA4 data of every client website into a monthly report that tracks each stage.
Frequently asked questions
Can SEO show results in 1 month?
Early stages can show within a few weeks, such as pages indexed and impressions appearing. A steady rise in clicks usually takes several months.
Why are older pages more often in the top 10?
The Ahrefs study found that 72.9% of top 10 pages are more than 3 years old. The study records page age, not the cause of the ranking.
Does requesting indexing in Search Console speed up SEO?
A request helps Google learn about a new URL. Requesting the same URL many times does not speed up crawling.
